Answer a question about songs
Q: We have previously inquired from you about listening to songs, and you answered us that profane songs are forbidden to listen to, so what is the ruling on listening to religious and patriotic songs, children’s songs and Christmas songs, knowing that they are always accompanied by playing, whether on radio or television?
A: Playing is absolutely forbidden, and all songs, if they are accompanied by playing, are forbidden. As for birthdays, they are an innovation, and it is forbidden to attend them and participate in them, because God Almighty says: And among the people is he who buys hadith for his own sake, in order to lead astray from the path of God without knowledge. [لقمان:6] Most of the commentators said: The idle talk is singing, and the voices of the musicians join it. Abdullah bin Masoud said Singing causes hypocrisy to grow in the heart just as water causes crops to grow. In Sahih al-Bukhari, the Prophet, peace be upon him, said: There will be people among my nation who will permit freedom, silk, wine and musical instruments And the heat: with the neglected ha and the forbidden faraj, and the silk: well-known, and the wine: all intoxicating, and the musicians: singing and playing instruments.
And in the Two Sahihs on the authority of Aisha, may God be pleased with her, on the authority of the Prophet, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, that he said: Whoever introduces something into this matter of ours that is not part of it, it will be rejected.
Celebrating birthdays is one of the newly invented things: because the Messenger, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, did not do that or command it, and he is the most sincere of people to the nation and the most knowledgeable of God’s law. and his companions They did not do it, and they are the most beloved of people to the Prophet, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, and the most keen of them to follow the Sunnah. If it was good, they would have preceded us to it.[1].
